Multi-Energy X-ray Inspection System for Foreign Body Detection in Packaged Food

When you inspect packaged food products on a production line, conventional metal detectors or single-energy X-ray systems may fail to detect low-density contaminants such as plastics, insects, or organic materials. A multi-energy inspection system allows you to identify foreign bodies based on their spectral signature rather than density alone.

Detect contaminants in packaged food with spectral X-ray analysis

The XSpectra® Top Down Inspection system from Xnext is an inline inspection machine designed to detect foreign bodies and product defects in packaged food products. The system inspects products from above using a vertical inspection geometry that allows reliable analysis of compact packaged products travelling on a conveyor line.

The machine uses XSpectra® multi-energy X-ray technology, which performs spectral analysis of the product using up to 1,024 energy levels. Instead of analysing only density differences, the system compares the absorption spectrum of each inspected product with that of potential contaminants. This allows the machine to detect both high-density contaminants (such as glass, metal, or stones) and low-density foreign bodies including plastics, insects, bones, or organic material that are difficult to identify with conventional inspection technologies.

During operation, each product passing on the line is scanned in milliseconds, enabling full inline inspection without slowing production throughput. The system can also verify product conformity and detect structural anomalies inside the product itself. This inspection geometry is particularly suited for compact packaged products such as dairy products, filled pasta, fresh salads, and frozen foods. The machine integrates easily into existing food processing lines and can automatically trigger rejection systems when contaminants are detected
